Remembering How to Do More with Less

 | March 18, 2010

New Jersey municipalities used to get along just fine without millions of dollars in annual aid payments from Trenton. Now it seems they're addicted to it and, to a borrow a phrase from Governor Christie, the "detox" necessitated by New Jersey's fiscal crisis will force these communities to do with less.

But is compulsory fiscal responsibility really a bad thing?

Hardly.

The good news here is that towns are presented with a fresh opportunity to remember how to do more with less, Save Jerseyans. That's what American-style limited government is supposed to be all about. Of course, whether local officials immediately take advantage of this unique moment in state history is questionable. Some municipal officials have already expressed a counter-productive intention to raise property taxes, avoid tough budget choices and blame Chris Christie for the situation. So be it. Their obstinance is all the more reason why the Legislature must back the property tax increase caps proposed by the Governor.

But have faith, Save Jerseyans! Even some Democrats recognize the writing on the wall:

I guess I can take this as a sign that the gadflies are running out of things to criticize. You stand for NOTHING. You merely like to be against people and things for the sake of being against them.

Cutting aid is okay, but why not across the board? He is cutting school aid by 7.4%, yet some towns lost 100%. How is that fair? He could cut it 100%, as long as it is the same for everyone and then we would save 11 billion dollars. But the socialist way is from each according to his ability to each according to his needs. I was hoping for more from a Republican, but I was fooled again.

Regarding Christie's move, I guess there is something to be said that if you don't force the schools to cut, they won't. Now they even have this two teachers in a classroom stuff.

Nj probably has 35% more public school teachers than NJ did in 1990. And probably even more than that compared to the 1970s when there were many more students. So, yes, there are cuts that can be made. But its very disappointing that he didn't slash Abbott aid more and eliminate pre-K. A 35% in Abbott aid and the elimination of pre-K would be highly justified.
