Fight Night in LD-14: Goodwin v. Wright

 | March 11, 2010

A special vote will take place tonight in LD-14, Save Jerseyans.

The LD-14 GOP will convene a convention at 7:30pm at La Villa Ristorante to select Bill Baroni's replacement in the State Senate. The candidates are Councilman Tom Goodwin (R-Hamilton) and former Assemblywoman Barbara Wright (R-Plainsboro). Wright has managed to accumulate some support from towns in Middlesex County, but Goodwin appears to dominate the numerically superior Mercer delegation with virtually no exceptions. Baroni himself endorsed Goodwin as his preferred successor when the councilman initially declared for the seat.

Your Blogger-in-Chief endorsed Councilman Goodwin, too (and did so before either candidate formally joined the race). You can read my original comments by clicking here. Tom is a great family man and public servant. That's beyond question. In my opinion, the most important thing he brings to the table is energyWhile I intend no disrespect to Ms. Wright, she is 76 years old on Election Day 2010. She's also been out of New Jersey politics for over a decade (when she was defeated by none other than Linda Greenstein). At this point, I'm not convinced she can set the pace necessary to mount a serious campaign capable of defeating Linda Greenstein in the fall. It's just not her time. It's Tom's.

Yet the most important goal of tonight's meeting should be unity, Save Jerseyans. State Senator Diane Allen (R) is ailing, and it's unclear whether she will seek another term for her LD-7 seat. If she doesn't, that seat is a likely Democrat pick-up. We can't afford to forfeit LD-14, too, simply because of completely avoidable infighting so let's please play nice everybody!
