Finally!

A new poll is out from Adam Geller who is polling for Mike Halfacre. PolitickerNJ has some choice bits that are pretty interesting:

"A recent poll shows that 39% of twelfth district voters believe Holt deserves to be re-elected, while 41% believe it is time for a new person. When Geller polled the district in 2004, Holt’s re-elect was at 51% and just 23% wanted a new congressman."

"In a head to head ballot test between Holt and “a Republican who, as Mayor, cut spending and lowered property taxes three years in a row,” Holt trailed by five percentage points, 46%-41%.  Against “a Republican who made millions on Wall Street, and who contributed some of his money to Democrats like Chuck Schumer and five House Democrats as recently as June of 2009,” Holt has a huge lead: 55%-20%. "

Take note though:

National Research Inc.  polled
300 likely voters between February 24-25 and has a margin of error of +/- 5.66%

While I would like to believe these results, this seems like a pretty lousy poll as evidenced by a +/- 5.66% margin of error. I do think however, and I have said it all along, that any and all ties to Wall Street right now are poison and it's going to be Scott Sipprelle's downfall. Voters are not going to warm up to another Wall Street power broker after they just voted one out of office.

Wall Street has severely abused public trust and the wounds are still fresh. Regardless of whether it's fair or not if Scott Sipprelle gets lumped into that category, people are going to make that connection and Rush Holt is going to exploit it for everything it's worth and rightfully so from a tactical standpoint just as Gov. Christie did against Jon Corzine.

Oh, brother. Do the Halfacre people think Republican voters are so stupid that they are going to take this self-serving "poll" seriously? What do you think the results would have been if the hypothetical match-ups had been characterized as follows: (1) Holt vs. a small-town mayor/lawyer/professional politician who makes his living off the taxpayer doing government legal work and who refused to allow the Boy Scouts access to public school facilities on the basis that they are an organization that practices “discrimination;” and (2) Holt vs. a successful entrepreneur who provides growth capital for small businesses, who protected his investors from the financial meltdown, and who fought corruption on Wall Street?

The Halfacre camp must be getting pretty desperate if they feel the need to resort to this sort of nonsense.

That is a really sad poll, not objective at all. Holt is definitely vulnerable though.

Can we get an objective poll that doesn't deliberately lead the those being questioned?

This type of deceptive, negative and malicious poll (paid for by the candidate himself, of course,) is a traditional tactic of desperate would-be Republican nominees. In the few cases where this tactic has worked, it has resulted in the nomination of a totally unelectable Republican candidate who commits political suicide in the process.

All the same, Sipprelle's wall street connection will be used against him. And his donation to Schumer. Plus he sort of looks like Rush Holt.. maybe not exactly, but he just reminds me of him. That's the scary part.
