Tom Kean, Jr. Still Leads Save Jersey "Lautenberg Replacement" Poll
| February 20, 2010The man who ran strong against Bob Menendez in 2006 is currently leading our Save Jersey poll to replace the ailing Senator Frank Lautenberg.
We found out yesterday that New Jersey's senior senator is being treated for stomach cancer. That's never good news, particularly when the patient is 86-years old.
It isn't lost on pundits that this grim development could catalyze a political melodrama with national implications. Another open Democrat seat would have a major impact as Republican battle to retake Congress in 2010. Under New Jersey law, Governor Chris Christie gets to appoint a replacement. He'd naturally name a Republican, and the GOP would suddenly have 42 seats heading into the fall elections.

Tom Kean, Jr. would be an exceedingly strong choice for Christie.
The younger Kean is a proven party leader and a solid fiscal conservative. He lost his first statewide race against Menendez by single digits in 2006 -- 53% to 45% -- when other Republicans were going down in flames by double-digits. No reason to think Kean couldn't hold his own in a normal or "good" cycle for the GOP, particularly with help from his close ally Governor Chris Christie. My favorite thing about Tom Kean is that he's genuinely interested in party building. We've been grateful for his friendship down here in South Jersey. He acknowledges our existence, just like when his pop campaigned in Camden City back in the 1980s. Major points with me, Save Jerseyans!
And as if the U.S. Senate angle weren't enough, Tom Kean's hypothetical promotion would trigger more drama in the State House. Kean is currently the GOP leader in a closely-divided state senate. Kevin O'Toole (R-Essex) would be an early favorite to succeed Kean. We love intraparty intrigue here at Save Jersey. It's much more fun to write about than "the issues" after a long, grueling campaign season!

Do You Support Trenton's A.C. Takeover?

You've turned very ghoulish. Remember when The Drug Addict had heart problems and you railed against those who hoped he'd die. You're as big a hypocrite as I thought you were.

I'm simply acknowledging the obvious... a partly-senial 86-year old with cancer isn't going to live forever. His inability to serve could tip the balance of power in Washington. It's a valid news item, Rick.
That's a lot different than wishing someone dead, as was the case when sick-in-the-head liberals like yourself were openly hoping for Rush Limbaugh's demise...http://blog.savejersey.com/2009/12/31/liberal-hatemongers-circulate-dierushdie-hashtag-on-twitter.aspx
As always, Rick, I can't be constrained -- nor can my audience be constrained -- by your disturbing lack of reading comprehension skills.

Nor, apparently, buy any modicum of decency.

I'm tired of feeling bad for bad men. He's a piece of sh*t who lies to taxpayers and steals from citizens. I'm with you, Matt... I feel bad for people who lose their homes/paychecks because of career criminals like Frank Lautenberg!!!

Tom Kean Jr. showed his true colors when he voted to confirm liberal activist Barry Albin for tenure on the State Supreme Court - he's a Republican in the vein of Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins; in other words, a RINO. You people forget that. If he became our Senator, he would probably vote for the health care farce and Cap And Tax. I wouldn't put it past him after voting for one of the people that saddled us with COAH, Abbott Districts, and Corzine's borrowing spree.
If Lautenberg has to be replaced, he should pick someone who actually is a conservative. Actions speak louder than words, and this is where Kean fails; he's good at verbally conveying a conservative message, but doesn't actually practice it. And that makes him no better than a liberal Democrat. Also, do you really want to appoint the person that got DESTROYED by Bob Menendez back in '06? That doesn't make any sense.

I saw a great idea on Free Republic: Steve Forbes.

The new deal voids the last year of the five-year contract he signed nfl jerseys wholesale when he joined the team in 2006 and is for the next three seasons according to the Houston Chronicle and Houston television station KRIV. He told the two outlets he wanted this so his contract would end the same year as his assistant coaches.
