UPDATE (2:50PM)

Chris Christie's comments on the Baroni appointment: "Senator Baroni is a distinguished leader with a record of putting the public first. He brings with him the right experience and leadership needed to help lead the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey into the new decade. I know that Bill shares my commitment to accountability and ending wasteful spending throughout state government. I am confident that Senator Baroni will do an excellent job and look after the public's interest and New Jersey’s interests while serving at the Port Authority.”

Tom Kean's remarks on Baroni's departure from the Senate: "Bill Baroni is a great Senator and a trusted friend.  During his service in the State Senate and General Assembly, he has always been an independent voice for the people of his district.  Bill is a dedicated public servant and I’m sure he’ll bring the same commitment to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  His dynamic voice will be missed by all the members of our caucus."

ORIGINAL STORY:

PolitickerNJ.com reports that state Senator Bill Baroni (R-Hamilton) is leaving the State Senate to take over the NY-NJ Port Authority.

Once a rising start in the NJGOP, Baroni's stock with the Republican base plummeted after taking unpopular positions in favor of some controversial liberal legislation, including a law to legalize gay marriages and the uber-expensive paid family leave legislation. Many had speculated that Baroni would enter the judiciary, so his departure from the Senate does not come as a complete surprise to State House watchers.

Lead contenders to replace Baroni include Hamilton Councilman Tom Goodwin. Such talk is anything but premature. A special convention is imminent, and then LD-14 automatically becomes a major battleground for the 2011 legislative elections.
