Will Webber Weigh Higher Office?

 | February 9, 2010

Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris) is a rising star in Garden State politics.

Re-elected by a solid margin in 2009 and elevated to the position of NJGOP Chair by Chris Christie, Webber is undeniably a "man of the future" for a Republican Party in need of youthful leadership. The old guard establishment loves him. The grassroots admire his rock-solid conservative record; he even founded New Jersey Reagan Day. Webber also enjoys quite a healthy following among GOP women! There's a reason why Assemblyman Webber is the face of our party while they keep yours truly hidden behind a computer screen, Save Jerseyans.

So how long before Jay considers higher office?

I've heard rumors that state Senator "Jersey Joe" Pennacchio isn't interested in serving indefinitely. With Jay's running mate Assemblyman DeCroce atop the Assembly GOP leadership totem pole, perhaps Jay is the natural choice to eventually succeed Jersey Joe? The U.S. Congressman from Jay's district is currently Rodney Frelinghuysen, who is still relatively young for the House at age 64, but Jay would certainly make a compelling challenger to U.S. Senator Bob Menendez in 2012 if other top contenders like state Senator Tom Kean (R-Union) ultimately decide to sit it out.

It's always fun to speculate! For now, watch Jay's address to the RNC Winter Meeting:

Chairman Webber is a top talent for all the reasons you mention, Matt. Webber went from holding no office, to the Assembly and GOP Chairmanship in about 18 months.
Webber's managed to turn a tough trick -- he's earned the bedrock loyalty of movement conservatives, while mainstreaming conservatism among the "establishment" GOP so much that he's become Chair of the NJGOP.
As for Webber making GOP women swoon, we'll just leave that one alone, Matt.

Chairman Webber is a great Republican leader. Rooney, kudos to you, who in early 2008 forecasted his rise, when he'd only been in office a month or two. What lottery numbers should I play next week, Matt?
