Trenton, NJ (LifeNews.com) -- A statewide pro-life group in New Jersey today endorsed gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie over his rival, incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine. Citing the need to elect a pro-life governor, the New Jersey Right to Life PAC backed Christie and noted that Corzine and independent candidate Chris Daggett are both pro-abortion.

“As Governor, Chris Christie will advocate for pro-life laws supported by a majority of New Jersey citizens," Marie Tasy, the head of the pro-life group, told LifeNews.com today.

"Chris believes we must work to reduce abortions in New Jersey through laws such as parental notification, a 24-hour waiting period and a ban on partial-birth abortion," Tasy added.

Tasy said New Jersey residents have no reason to support Corzine in next month's close election.

"Jon Corzine’s record as Governor and U. S. Senator demonstrates that he has been on the wrong side of every issue that matters most to NJ families," she said.

"Chris Christie will support laws that will aid and strengthen our families, protect our citizens, and restore a culture of life and respect to our state. That is real change we can believe in and why we have endorsed Chris Christie for Governor,” Tasy told LifeNews.com.

“We look forward to working with Chris Christie to promote life affirming public policies that protect both mother and child. NJRTL-PAC will mobilize our members and utilize its various resources to help Chris Christie become our next Governor,” the pro-life advocate continued.

After spending millions of dollars on negative television commercials, Corzine has pulled into a close contest with Christie, who had been leading most of the summer.

“The New Jersey governor’s race is going down to the wire,” predicted the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in an analysis of its poll results released last week.

Quinnipiac found Christie with a statistically insignificant 41 to 40 percent lead over Corzine among likely voters. Daggett came in at 14 percent, with 5 percent unsure. Christie’s negatives have risen steeply and he now joins Corzine in holding higher unfavorable-to-favorable ratings.

Christie told reporters last week that “I should be dead by now,” given Corzine’s spending, “but here I am — still with a lead, and I feel better now than I have felt this entire race.”

The concern pro-life advocates have is that Daggett will help Corzine win a narrow re-election victory with a mere plurality of the vote. But they are hoping that his numbers will drop as voters look between Christie and Corzine.

“Third-party candidates typically lose support in the final weeks of a campaign,” polling firm Rasmussen Reports observed in an analysis of its latest New Jersey results. “That’s because some of their supporters eventually decide to vote for the lesser of two evils among the major party candidates.”
