Play-by-Play Recap
***Refresh for Updates***

8:37- DEBATE CONCLUDED

8:36 - Daggett's Closing Statements: attacks the two party system, while at the same time ADOPTS the tax-and-spend policies of the Corzine Democrats. He's a tricky little man.

8:34 - Christie's Closing Statements: NICE-- says what he should have said throughout the debate.... "Is New Jersey better off than 4 years ago?" Returns to revenue problem vs. debt and spending problem paradigm. Good closing argument! Hopefully people stayed tuned long enough to hear it. I almost didn't, Save Jerseyans.

8:33 - Corzine's Closing Statements: "We see stark contrasts..." We do! You and Daggett want to take all our money. Chris is committed to giving it back.
  • Corzine is such a terrible speaker. Really. It's amazing how someone can be a U.S. Senator, Governor and still trip over his words so frequently.

QUESTIONS OVER

8:31 - Stupid lightening round about sports, etc. I'm grabbing a drink. BRB.

8:22 - Corruption
  • Christie: Apply law vigorously to everyone in public life. Also references plan to end dual office holding, multiple pensions, etc to improve transparency
  • Daggett: essentially agrees with what Chris just said, but attacks spending from RGA/DGA (even though it's not illegal)
  • Corzine: takes a shot at Christie for "no-bid contracts." Did over 100 politicians go to jail on his watch or not? LOL

8:22 - Free-for-All
  • Daggett attacks rebates
  • Corzine attacks "trickle-down-economics"
  • Christie attacks Corzine's tax hikes

ASIDE: As usual, Chris is the only one with a workable plan to address the root economic obstacle impeding New Jersey prosperity: big government. But thus far, I think he's missed a few key opportunities to clearly illustrate the differences btw himself and the two tax-and-spend liberals he's running against.

8:18 - Mammograms
  • Daggett: supports mandates; talks about the importance of screenings.
  • Corzine: supports mandates; betrays his ignorance re: the free market!
  • Christie: way to make insurance accessible and affordable for everyone is to stop putting new mandates in place.... Chris SHOULD call for an end to current mandates. Another missed opportunity.

8:14 -
The Public Option
  • Christie: much better answer: no to public option, need to focus on expanding private options!
  • Daggett: against public option but won't oppose mandates. So you don't have to buy the government's plan but Daggett wants to tell you what you have to buy! I hate these people. No logic at all.
  • Corzine: "stands with the people of N.J." ... but won't let them choose their own plan! You LIE, Jon!
  • Christie responds: mandates put financial pressure on citizens and hospitals.... need to increase access by increasing affordability with choice and competition. GOOD.

8:09 - Consolidation
  • Corzine: credits his "cap" for encouraging consolidation. Talks about Princeton Borough and Twp. possibly consolidating, Gloucester County's common tax assessments, etc. Again, I'm very skeptical. Are towns the problem, or is TRENTON'S SPENDING the problem? We could afford our OWN local services if Trenton stopped taking our tax dollars.
  • Christie: use mix of grants and pressure to encourage consolidation
  • Daggett: gave the answer Christie should've given about cutting government cost. Daggett can't solve the problem b/c he insists on raising taxes yet again. Missed opportunity for Christie to call Daggett out for his hypocrisy. Shoot! =/

8:05 -
The Disinvestment of N.J. Higher Ed
  • Hear the silence? The Fox Panel finally hit the mute button (or at least turned the volume waaay down). Thank you!
  • Daggett: need to find the funding
  • Corzine: says he increased tuition aid grants and STARS program, new tuition caps, etc. Again, he thinks these band aids are as good as cures. Wrong! We need to talk about affordability.
  • Christie: wants to invest more in higher ed; references 30,000 N.J. students leaving the state this fall and not returning.
  • Daggett criticizes Corzine's tuition aid grants for not contributing to building dorms, attracting high-end teachers, jobs, etc.

7:59 - Vision for the Meadowlands & Casino Gambling
  • Christie: Xandadu a "disaster"; "darn ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life!" LOL.... Chris also comes down against expanding racetrack gambling elsewhere until AC recovers.
  • Daggett okay with putting slots in the Meadowlands.... he just lost votes in Atlantic County!
  • Corzine: working hard with Newark and Izod to make the project profitable for N.J. Once again, blames it all on a slump in the commercial sector. The man is shameless!
  • Christie: a lot of "moving pieces"... need to see what's up with Nets, include Bergen in the process

7:55 -
Business Climate
  • Corzine throws out some anecdotal evidence of progress on this front. Fails to mention our skyrocketing unemployment rate (Currently @ 9.8%). "We're winning our fair share of businesses." Huh???
  • Christie throws out two plans: freeze new regulations and evaluate current regulations... makes a good point about compliance costs and how they scare away businesses and the jobs they bring to N.J.
  • Daggett talks about corporate tax cuts. Okay, but what good is bringing more businesses into the state IF sales and gas taxes go up? That hurts consumption and makes it harder for businesses to put affordable goods on market and for people to buy them.
  • Corzine, as usual, blames it all on the national recession. Does this guy accept blame for anything he does?

7:51 -
Education Funding
  • Daggett doesn't offer a plan. Worst answer of the night.
  • Corzine talks about expanding school days, school years, public financed pre-K, etc.... talks about his opposition to vouchers. Booo!
  • Christie discusses the need to empower kids and parents in New Jersey's depressed urban centers. An "obscenity" in our state. Interesting phraseology. Talks about the need to expand access to charter schools and vouchers in failing school districts.
  • Daggett, once again, doesn't come down on either side. Who is avoiding specifics now, Daggey?

7:47 -
Illegal Immigration
  • Christie: a federal issue where the feds have failed. State shouldn't have to spend limited resources to deal with it.
  • Daggett: opposes 287G program/local law enforcement officers actually enforcing the law. Bleeding hearts of the world - unite!
  • Corzine disputes term "alien." Oh shut up! Maybe Christie should buy Corzine a dictionary, too! Daggett can save the money on a calculator for Chris and chip in! Corzine also talks about giving illegal aliens in-state tuition rates. Sure, what the heck! We've got money growing on trees, right?

7:43 - Same Sex Marriage: Christie opposed, Corzine & Daggett in favor. Pretty straightforward.
  • Christie asked to defend his position on equal rights grounds. Chris answers that the civil union institution is sufficient to ensure equal rights.

7:39 - Daggett questioned about his approach to the N.J. Supreme Court
  • I'd like to tell you what Corzine is saying BUT I CAN'T HEAR OVER THE STUPID FOX PANEL! ARGH! **hits head on keyboard**
  • Christie names Justice Alito as a good model for a state court justice. Supreme Court's role is to interpret law, not MAKE law. "If they wanted to make law, they should've run for the legislature." Great quote!

7:35 - Panelist asks Christie about negative campaigning... disarms everyone with great joke referencing his weight!
  • Daggett apparently hates negative campaigning. A convenient complaint for someone who lies all the time! Why would he want someone to call him out on it!
  • Corzine completely ignores the question b/c he's the one responsible for the ugliness in this campaign. HELLO PANELISTS. Call him out on it!
  • Christie: "Have I been living in the same state as the Governor?" Accuses Corzine of perpetrating "character assassination?" Christie asks if this discussion will help create jobs. Good point that will, hopefully, resonate with voters.

ASIDE: MEMO TO FOX PANEL.... SHUT UP! I CAN'T HEAR.

7:30 - Question to Corzine about creating jobs for graduating students.
  • Corzine doesn't answer the question. Talks about roads?
  • Corzine takes a swipe at Daggett and offers to buy him a dictionary for calling a tax hike a tax cut! Tells student asking question that we need a new governor to create an environment where businesses and taxpayers can succeed... contrasts it to the current toxic climate under Corzine.

7:26 - Question about tolls to Daggett: DING DING! Not even a half hour in and Daggett refuses to rule out raising taxes!!!
  • Corzine essentially agrees with Daggett but defends his 2007 plan to sell the state highways.
  • CHRIS HIT HIS STRIDE: Says Corzine and Daggett see a revenue problem where he sees a TAX AND SPEND problem. Well put, Chris! Reiterates refusal to raise a single tax and cut spending....
  • Daggett offers to buy Chris a calculator. Maybe Chris should take him up on the offer, especially since Daggett will probably add a sales tax to it if elected! Let Chris Daggett foot the bill for it....
  • Corzine agrees with Daggett about buying Chris a calculator. Get a room, you two!

7:21 - Question to Christie: "How will you improve the standard of living?"

  • Chris will restore property tax rebates for immediate relief.
  • This Fox Panel needs to shut up. I can't hear myself think!
  • The one thing I agree with Daggett on- property tax rebates are a scam. However, he once again talks about RAISING other taxes to pay for rollbacks in other taxes. It's ridiculous!
  • Corzine talks about consolidation. Another thing I don't really agree with any of the candidates on. How will centralizing control of services give more power to taxpayers?
  • FINALLY --> Chris calls out the other two candidate for proposing tax hikes; these taxes, Chris points out, will hurt small businesses and all taxpayers... not just "the rich"

7:17 - First Question to Corzine: "How to close the budget gap?"

  • Very wonkish response from Jon. Didn't get it all b/c FoxNews's streaming feed got jammed up.
  • Christie laid out $8 1/2 billion in cuts. Chris talks about being the only candidate to promise to NOT raise taxes.
  • Daggett talks about using the stimulus funds. Doesn't say anything sensational.
  • Corzine responds by criticizing Christie for giving "tax cuts to the rich." Where have I heard that before. Snoooooze.

7:12 - Daggett first. Very flat. A bureaucrat talking about special interest influence? He-he....

7:12 - FINALLY! Introductions underway.

7:10 - We're still waiting for the debate to begin.

6:58 - Candidates arrive at the podiums. I hope Corzine didn't spend too much on that mustard tie! =)
