Save Jersey Exclusive: An Interview with Sen. Tom Kean, Jr. (Part I)
"People have given up on the New Jersey Dream," according to State Senator Tom Kean, Jr.
It's what we here at SaveJersey.com have asserted since our inception: excessive taxation and rampant corruption are driving residents out of the great Garden State. We recently had the great privilege of speaking with Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. in an exclusive SaveJersey.com interview. Senator Kean has been a leader in the New Jersey State Senate for over five years, bringing a fresh approach to everything from alternative energy to healthcare. We were so pleased to find so many of the Senator's concerns, criticisms and ideas were in accordance with our own--all of which we plan to share with you in our special two-part interview.
As you might have seen in the past week, Senator Kean, along with Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce, released what they have called a "Common Sense" solution for economic reform within the state. The plan features long-term solutions to the state's economic turmoil, something which Kean proudly reports Republicans have had on the table "since May." According to Kean, "Democrats ignored signs on Wall Street...and Main Street for years." While the "Common Sense" plan contains many long-term positions, Kean sees several immediate courses of action. Some of what we discussed included:
1. Vetoing the Toll Hikes Proposed by the Turnpike Authority
According to Senator Kean, such toll hikes would "ripple through the economy" affecting the prices of food and other goods-- all consequences that would hurt New Jersey families. The Republican plan not only rejects these increases, but also ensures that money is put into the transportation fund, something which will prove to be instrumental in terms of improvements. It's imperative that Governor Corzine does not sign into law what is really a thinly-veiled tax, Kean believes.
2. Instituting a Sales Tax Holiday
Kean asserts that this short-term, twenty nine day break from sales taxes during the holiday season will not only spur the economy but "ensure jobs." The Senator contends that the sales tax holiday will create an environment conducive to economic growth, a strengthening that will allow people to keep their jobs, and the state to continue to collect on those income taxes. Kean also foresees many out-of-state consumers coming to the Garden State to do their holiday shopping tax-free, in the event that the holiday is implemented.
3. Reforming the COAH Proposals
Senator Kean cites the work of Senator Bateman (R-16) in his efforts to call attention to this issue. Bateman has said recently:
“This legislation, coupled with the new COAH requirements, has the potential to drastically alter the culture of many New Jersey communities, and not for the better. The estimated $18 billion in costs of compliance will be borne by local property taxpayers who already pay by far the highest property taxes in the nation. The plan will starve communities of the resources they need to pay for vital services such as schools and police protection.
“Perhaps most important of all, this bill and the new quotas will further slow New Jersey’s economy. Businesses seeking to relocate will not want to pay the unbelievably high price tag of a scheme that can only result in diminished quality of life for their employees.
“I fully support the League of Municipalities’ appeal of the new COAH rules, and I urge my fellow legislators to repeal the affordable housing law the governor signed today. It is a step backward for our state.”
4. Supporting S281, 'The New Jersey Economic Development Promotion Act'
Kean describes this bill as one that encourages entrepreneurship, "promotes efficient government," and "reduced red tape." According to the Senator, if the development process is streamlined, New Jersey can begin to attract new businesses, bringing jobs and economic growth to the Garden State.
Senator Kean clearly has a new approach to government and we here at SaveJersey.com greatly appreciate his efforts to embolden the state's economy, along with the time he took out to share his thoughts with us.
Check back for Part II of our interview with Senator Kean, including his thoughts on the current and future races!
Thank You, Senator Kean!

Sen. Tom Kean Jr. was less than impressive in his capacity of Senate Health Committee member last Dec. 15. It is well known that he is against New Jersey's medical marijuana bill S-118, however it was surprising that he refused to even listen to seriously ill residents who came to Trenton to testify on behalf of the bill. Additionally, he had no questions or remarks for anyone else testifying. Additionally, his "no" vote was cast in his absence. He is like most medical marijuana detractors. He doesn't have the courage of his conviction to discuss medical marijuana on record. Think otherwise? If he really thought that he was right and could defend his position he would readily have such a discussion. He would jump at the chance to show his skill at putting medical marijuana supporters in their place, but he doesn't because he can't. Prove me wrong. Give Tom Kean Jr. the chance to destroy me in a medical marijuana discussion and prove that he's not the coward that I think he is. Good luck.
My wife died 5 years ago after a 32 year battle with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society now says that marijuana has a neuroprotective effect which may slow the progression of the disease, enabling a person with MS to live longer. It's too late for Cheryl, but not for others. Four MS patients braved the trip to Trenton only to have Tom Kean Jr. ignore them. Really, he ignored them. I look forward to the day when he agrees to have a public discourse on this issue. He is a member of New Jersey's Senate Health Committee. He should start acting like he understands the importance of that privilege, and stand ready to back up his votes with some discussion. But he can't, and he knows it. I will be making this request to him through his home office this week, but he doesn't have the courage to have such a discussion. Go ahead and ask him to have a recorded 15 minute conversation with Jim Miller about medical marijuana. He'll know what you mean...but he won't have the discussion because he knows that he can't handle it.
