Et Tu, Colin?

By Zebulon Pike | October 19, 2008

Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama is a cowardly betrayal by a man owing his entire career to Republicans and Republicanism.

Disgraceful? Certainly. Illogical? Of course. Surprising? Unfortunately, not at all.

Sure- Powell has always been a committed liberal in the Rockefeller mold. Note that his only substantive criticism from today's Meet the Press appearance was his unease at John McCain's anticipated "conservative" Supreme Court appointments. Powell is a long-time supporter of abortion on demand, affirmative action, high tax rates and the rest of the liberal gospel. But his former employers, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Dubya, all leaned heavily toward socially conservative positions. So what's changed, general? Does Colin Powell, one of America's most experienced statesmen, truly believe that a community organizer from Chicago is more qualified than Senator John McCain?

Hardly. Colin Powell is motivated not by ideology, but by spite and vengeance.

Powell reacted badly to his minimized role in the Bush Administration. He was resentful when Bush leaned on Rumsfeld and Rice. Undeniably, General Powell served his country honorably through two wars. However, Secretary Powell served his country most dishonorably during the course of his stint at Foggy Bottom. He let his vanity get the best of him. Secretary Powell sought to undermine his American President at every turn. Information leaks and inconsistent statements became a standard practice at the Powell State Department. He emerged as a polarizing influence in opposition to a war that, in case you haven't been paying attention general, is going quite well for the United States under General Petraeus. Perhaps that's why John McCain has earned the endorsements of four of the last five Secretaries of State.

America is at a crossroads and the stakes haven't been higher in decades. For Colin Powell to stab America's soldiers in the back by endorsing Obama, the candidate demanding rapid withdrawal from Iraq and accusing American soldiers of bombing civilians in Afghanistan, is an outrage and a disgrace.

Congratulations, General Powell. Your access to the Oval Office is restored. See if that helps you sleep at night.

How quickly conservatives are to turn on a great American hero when he's no longer useful to them.

Colin Powell owes nothing to the GOP or the Bushes. Its the other way around. A decent courageous man who supported these motley crowd even to the last end finally spoke his mind and his heart. Its not racist when a white guy supports another white guy, but if its the other way around, God help us. The GOP is is melting right before your eyes, deconstructing into an filthy ooze of a smelly, phony - patriotic, phelgm of stale ideas that had profoundly failed during the last eight years.

Why isn't Lieberman coming out for McCain about race? Both Powell and Lieberman made endorsements based on their honest views about what's best for America.

I dont think one more black vote for oSama would change anything. I mean 95% of these black sheep are voting for him anyways. Would a brown nose show when a guy is black? Just curious.

Ya know, that's really going over the line, bro.
If you look back on the Primary campaign, it was actually Hillary, that was getting the majority of Black votes. Until the S Carolina Primary, when Bill made some questionable comments. That's when Blacks started supporting Obama.
You need to get out more. Hating people because of their skin color, just doesn't work anymore. Sorry.

Did you actually listen to what he said?
Supreme Court Justices, were one of many substantive reasons he gave. Off the top of my head... McCain choosing Gov Palin; McCain's actions over the past few weeks; McCain's negative Campaign; Obama's level-headed intelligence; Obama's desire to put diplomacy, as a first choice, over military intervention; Obama's inclusive campaign; Obama's intellectual curiousity; Obama's depth of knowledge; Obama's a generational change... I can go on, but Gen Powell seems to have a whole bunch of reasons, for his choice.
    Least of which is revenge.
Gen Powell, who I've had many disagreements with, owes his success to his own achievements, not the GOP.
And by the way, Gen Powell has never supported abortion on-demand. He supports choice, like the majority of Americans. Nobody is pro-abortion.

then why didn't he say something during the past three administrations he served in? b/c he was happy to let republicans advance his career, but now that he doesn't need conservatives, he's happy to stab them in the back and go with the front runner.

the army did more for colin powell than he ever did for it. he's endorsing an idiot who claims u.s. troops bomb civilians for shits and giggles. He's a national disgrace.

Colin Powell has always served his country when asked to -- we Americans were fortunate to have him serve us, and are proud of him. He served his country once again today, God Bless him!
