Interview with Roland Straten

By Alex Smith | September 22, 2008

Roland Straten is running for Congress in New Jersey's eighth district, where he is facing opposition from Bill Pascrell.  Mr. Straten graciously took some time out of his busy campaign schedule to talk with SaveJersey.com about some of the issues facing the district and New Jersey as a whole.

On Why He's the Better Man for the Job:

"There are some really significant difference between the current Congressman and myself.  First he is a career politician whose main focus has been to further his political career and support earmarks for not only District 8, but for any other district where he can gain a political advantage.

On the other had I am an engineer and businessman.  My career has been spent keeping costs low and designing effective and efficient solutions to problems.  This experience is sorely needed in congress."

On the #1 Issue both Locally and Nationally:

"Out of control spending and high taxes!!"

On Governor Corzine's Job Performance:

"I had high hopes that despite his left wing tendencies, Governor Corzine would bring to bear some of the lessons he learned at Goldman Sachs to run NJ a bit more efficiently and honestly.  It appears that Goldman Sachs was wise in asking him to step down.  He has continued the failed left wing policies of the previous high spending, high taxes, anti-business administrations.  Unfortunately, Goldman Sachs gave him so much money that he could afford to purchase the election in New Jersey.  The recent meltdown of Wall Street has me question whether Wall Street teaches people how to manage money.  Corzine and his ilk learned to take from the people and enrich themselves which so many in government are now doing."

On Corruption in the Garden State:

"It would be easy to say that we need to put them all in jail, and Chris Christie is doing a good job at that.  What we really need to do, however,  is not to elect crooks in the first place and defeat them at the first sign of corruption.  We need to convince the voters that this is their responsibility.  I will address this problem by doing my best to educate voters and convince them that having crooks in office is not in the country’s and voters best interest."
