Going Back to the Well

Thousands of New Jersey homes, particularly in the state's rural Southern and Northwestern regions, rely on well-systems for their water supply. If you head one of these 400,000 households, you might want to have your water checked:

1 in 8 private N.J. wells contaminated

TRENTON - One in eight private wells in New Jersey is contaminated.

The state Environmental Protection Department says it examined records of more than 51,0000 well tests conducted for landlords and real estate transactions between September 2002 and April 2007. About 12.5 percent were found to have a high level of at least one drinking water contaminant.

About 400,000 homes in the state use private wells for drinking water.

The DEP says people who have wells should get them tested.
