Mitt Romney for Vice President
By Matt Rooney | August 26, 2008
John McCain's pick vice-presidential selection could come as early as Friday morning (a few sources even point to a surprise Thursday announcement to steal some of Obama's convention thunder). While Republicans enjoy a pretty deep bench of qualified candidates, I'll throw my two cents in and advocate for a Mitt Romney candidacy:
1. Romney is well-liked by the GOP base
More than a few hard-right Republicans, ranging from evangelical leaders to talk show hosts, privately wish that they had embraced Mitt Romney sooner in the primary season. By the end of the process, Romney had found his voice and successfully won over a good deal of the GOP McCain-skeptics caucus. Except for the handful of bigots who will never vote for a Mormon, Romney will satisfy enough of the base to rally the troops and put the GOP in a strong position for November.
2. Romney plays well in the West/Michigan
Romney's Mormon heritage and Reaganesque economic libertarianism makes him a potent candidate in the American West. Except for McCain's native Arizona, Romney racked up considerable primary support during the western leg of the primary campaign. States like Nevada and Colorado may prove crucial to McCain's electoral strategy, making Mitt an ideal running mate going into the fall campaign.

3. Romney has impeccable economic credentials
There are few American businessmen more successful than Mitt Romney. Mitt is a self-made multi-millionaire with an unmatched understanding of the challenges facing 21st century U.S. industry and commerce. McCain has had some trouble establishing an economic edge over Obama, and I believe that Romney could definitely help open up a lead on what voters consistently rank as their number one issue.
4. Romney could take Biden in a debate
Joe Biden, notoriously hot-headed and self-congratulating, is no Dick Cheney. Romney's command of the issues, cool demeanor and movie-star charm would make for a formidable and potentially devestating debate opponent.
5. Romney is the right age
Romney is sufficiently seasoned, both in life experience and years lived, to come across as "ready to lead" in McCain's stead. At the same time, Mitt is a youthful and charismatic baby boomer that would instill both energy and confidence in the Republican ticket.
What do you think? We should know in a matter of days, so weigh in now and leave a comment below.

Mitt Romney is uniquely qualified to tackle our country's economic and fiscal issues: devaluation of the dollar, out-of-control spending, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Mitt has turned around companies (Staples, Home Depot, etc.), the Olympics, and the State of Massachusetts. When you add to that conservative social values, and an exemplary personal and family life - - He's the best choice for McCain’s Number Two.
Mitt Romney has the right qualifications (the only one with non-governmental (Bain, Olympics) leadership experience, a deep-seated faith, a vision for this country's future, and an exemplary personal and family life. He won most of the GOP debates.
Mitt has the organizational skills to help MCain run a campaign in the general election and run the country. Obama has never even run a lemonade stand. Mitt would appeal to the Independents and some Democrats for his unique qualifications in these times of economic uncertainty.

Mitt Romney is a great choice. I also suggest former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele. Mr. Steele would be great to go after Barry Hussein U-bama.
