Christie Leads Corzine by 1 in Latest '09 Poll

By Matt Rooney | August 12, 2008

Check out today's Star-Ledger. U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, who remains relatively unknown statewide, appears to be on a strong electoral footing in early 2009 gubernatorial polling:

Quinnipiac University's first polling on the potential match up for the 2009 gubernatorial campaign found Corzine and Christie in a dead heat -- taking 40 percent and 41 percent of the vote, respectively. Christie, a Republican, has not confirmed whether he will take on the Democratic incumbent, but several GOP leaders have said he was their preferred candidate. The poll of 1,519 registered voters has a margin of error of 2.5 percent and was conducted from Aug. 4 to Aug. 10. It showed Christie claiming the support of Republicans and independents and Corzine winning among Democrats.

Here's what to take away from this latest poll- Corzine is preforming very poorly among New Jersey's massive bloc of unaffiliated voters. Even in "blue" Jersey, a candidate cannot hope to prevail statewide without the support of independent voters. Bergen County, where Republican registration has decline but remains strong, is particularly crucial in any New Jersey election. Better than 10% of the state's registered voters reside in one of Bergen's 70 municipalities. Here's a (very) quick statistical breakdown:

NJ Registered Voters:

Democrats: 1.7 million

Republicans: 1 million

Unaffiliated: 2.2 million

This latest poll must have Governor Corzine reaching for the Asprin. In a year when Democrats are supposedly poised to bury Republicans and build a lasting majority in Washington, Jon Corine appears to have turned most New Jersey voters off to the kind of large, expensive and corrupt government that liberalism inevitably produces.

Forget about November 2008. Bring on Fall 2009.

Have there been any polls comparing Steve Lonegan to Jon Corzine? I would bet that Mr. Lonegan polls better than Chris Christie.

I guest my question is which one of these has a better relationship with the infamous South Jersey "bitch slapping" Power Broker G. Norcross. Several years ago when Christie was allegedly investigation George they were spotted having lunch as some off the beaten path dinner. And I believe this was the same year George punched a leading NJGOP endorsed alleged corrupt politician in the face for not honoring an agreement he had with George.

Wow, it looks like there is only one party in NJ - Not democrat and not republican but Power Broker Party USA.

I hope I am still allowed to be part of this blog community but I got to call it the way I see it.

Christie is part of the problem, he is not the answer for Republicans, except for those Republicans who are RINOs, corrupt, and like taxing the hell out of us. Unfortunately, there are a lot of elected RINOs in New Jersey.
