Beijing Bush Dominates Olympic Coverage
By Matt Rooney | August 10, 2008
Barack Obama and his media allies remind us daily that George W. Bush is loathed around the globe. Tell me, Senator Obama: does this look like a man suffering in solitude?

Consider events from Dubya's perspective. You are, after all, the lame duck President of the United States only three months out from a presidential election. Both potential successors are fighting over which is the least like you. Why suffer through a sweltering DC August recess when you could be enjoying VIP seating at the world's premier sporting event? I am glad to see President Bush enjoying a well-deserved retirement tour. Setting aside your personal opinion of the man, it is inarguable that President Bush hasn't had an easy day since September 10, 2001.
However, the fun quotient of George Bush's vacation is not what makes his trip so entertaining. I've been thoroughly amused by how the allegedly hated American president has completely dominated NBC's Olympics coverage. Whether it's a medal-round swimming event or women's volleyball doubles, President Bush is inevitably shown grinning in the audience and waving his small American flag. His enthusiasm mirrors a child's joy watching a Fourth of July parade and I find it incredibly endearing. Perhaps a better analogy is that of an overjoyed father watching his talented children make the family proud. The President did spend much of his time, apart from a few diplomatic engagements, visiting American athletes and offering pep talks tailor-made by the leader of the free world.
Dare I say that President Bush's noble performance has infused me with "hope?" The media would have you believe that Barack Obama has a monopolistic claim on all things hopeful, but President Bush's contagious and enchanting love of country should remind every American why this nation is still the greatest on earth. Bush no doubt feels the tickle in his spine and the lump in his throat every time a hardworking, middle class American athlete stands for a gold medal and fights back tears during The Star-Spangled Banner. Bush's boundless optimism and voluntary patriotism serve as a shining contrast to the objectionable conduct of the oppressive Chinese government. Our president's emotional example is also a far cry from the dark sentiments of Barack Obama, the presidential candidate who says American greatness is not what it used to be. Tell Michael Phelps that this isn't the land of opportunity.
When all is said and done, it will be interesting to see whether Bush's positive prime time exposure has an equally positive effect towards softening his negatives. Either way, the man discounted by an entire planet is having a gold medal performance and loving every minute of it.

George appears to be really enjoying himself. Why not? He has the best seats and access nobody else has - practices, team meetings, riding the bike course.
